Course Overview & Strategic Objectives
The Aviation Security (AVSEC) Course is designed to provide aviation personnel with the knowledge and practical skills required to safeguard civil aviation against acts of unlawful interference. The course is conducted in accordance with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) Aviation Security Regulations, the National Civil Aviation Security Training Programme (NCASTP), and ICAO Annex 17 – Security.
Participants will gain a thorough understanding of aviation security principles, threat identification, access control procedures, passenger and baggage screening, security awareness, and emergency response measures. The training prepares personnel to perform security-related duties effectively while ensuring compliance with KCAA regulatory requirements and international aviation security standards.

Historical acts of unlawful interference (hijackings, bombings)
Current and emerging global threats (cyber threats, drones, insider threats).
The primary objective of aviation security
ICAO’s role and Annex 17 Standards.
National legislation (KCAA requirements and the NCASP).
Roles of airport operators, airlines, and state police/military.
Identification of Security Restricted Areas (SRAs) and sterile areas.
Permit and badging systems (staff, vehicles, and visitors).
Challenging unauthorized persons.
Types of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and incendiary devices.
Recognizing restricted articles, firearms, and dangerous goods.
Concealment methods used by perpetrators.
Operating X-ray equipment and Walk-Through Metal Detectors (WTMD).
Hand-wand procedures and physical pat-downs.
Hold Baggage Screening (HBS) protocols and reconciliation.

- General familiarity with civil aviation authorities (e.g., KCAA, EASA, FAA) and ICAO's role in global standards.

Assessment & Official Credential
Certificate of Competency in AVSEC
Delegates undergo evaluations, including matrix exercises and a final exam (70% pass mark). Upon completion, delegates are awarded an official Think Aviation Training Certificate of Completion recognized by KCAA for fulfilling mandatory safety post-holder training requirements.

Depending on the specific regulatory module (such as Aircrew or Ground), initial AVSEC training typically takes 4 to 8 hours to complete. Upon successfully passing the final assessment and scenario evaluations, participants are awarded an Aviation Security Training Certificate valid under KCAA and specific airline guidelines.
